Easy 7-mile paved bike trail around Newport Bay back bay with marshes, birds, and water views.
The Back Bay Loop is a 7-mile paved multi-use trail that circles the inner Newport Bay marshes. The route passes through restored salt marshes, mud flats, and water edges. It's a dedicated bike path (mostly separated from car traffic) suitable for casual cyclists. The loop can be shortened (3-4 miles) by not completing the full circuit.
It's a manageable distance for casual cyclists with scenic water views throughout. The marshes create a sense of nature within the urban area. Bird watching (herons, egrets, plovers) is excellent. The paved surface accommodates all bike types. It's a complete loop, so navigation is simple. Water views are constant; no boring sections.
Rent bikes at Newport Beach if needed. Start from the main trailhead near Back Bay Drive or the Discovery Well. Go counterclockwise for marsh views on your right. Morning is best for birds and to avoid afternoon heat. The route is flat; it's accessible for varied fitness levels. Bring water and sun protection.
The trail attracts crowds on weekends, especially nice weather days. Some sections can be windy (exposed water). The marshes smell at low tide. The loop is short if you're an experienced cyclist; it's not a challenging ride. Wildlife viewing requires patience; you won't see animals constantly.
Go on a weekday morning in spring when bird migration is active; you'll have the trail mostly to yourself and peak bird activity.
