Carbon Canyon Redwood Grove

A planted grove of coast redwoods in Brea, sustained by irrigation since 1975. An unexpected redwood cluster in an inland Orange County canyon.

What It Is

Carbon Canyon Regional Park in Brea preserves a small planted grove of coast redwoods (Sequoia sempervirens). The trees are not native and not old-growth. They were planted in 1975 when the park opened, grown from seedlings distributed as a promotional giveaway by a local bank. The grove is now about 51 years old and survives Southern California's arid climate only because OC Parks runs an artificial irrigation system. A short trail (roughly 1.1 miles round trip) reaches the grove from the parking area.

Why It's Worth Your Time

Coast redwoods are iconic to Northern California, not Orange County. Seeing them growing 400+ miles south of their natural range is a botanical curiosity worth the walk. The canopy filters direct sun, creating cool conditions on the canyon floor that feel unusual for the region. The contrast with the surrounding dry chaparral is what makes the visit distinctive.

How To Do It Right

Park at the main lot inside Carbon Canyon Regional Park and follow the redwood trail. The hike is easy and short, accessible for varied fitness levels. Bring a light jacket. The canyon floor is cool even in summer heat. Morning light filters through the canopy well. Quiet time lets you notice the detail: ferns, shade plants, and the forest-floor ecology that the irrigation system supports.

The Honest Take

Set expectations honestly. This is a small planted grove of ~51-year-old trees, not an old-growth redwood forest. The grove takes 45 minutes to walk thoroughly. Crowds on weekends can diminish the forest experience. Parking is limited and costs $5 on Saturdays and Sundays (versus $3 weekdays), up to $7 on major holidays. Some visitors expect a larger natural redwood stand and are disappointed by the scale and the irrigation-dependent context. Take it as what it is: an unusual botanical experiment that has held for half a century.

Pro Tip

Go on a weekday morning. The grove is quiet, the light through the canopy is soft, and parking is $3 instead of the weekend $5.
