Short, scenic waterfall hike in the Santa Ana Mountains with creek crossings and old-growth sycamores.
Holy Jim Falls is a 2.5-mile out-and-back hike starting from Holy Jim Canyon Road in Lake Elsinore (in the Cleveland National Forest). The trail follows Holy Jim Creek through a narrow canyon shaded by coast live oaks and sycamores, crossing the creek multiple times on the way to a cascading waterfall. It's a genuine water feature in the inland mountains.
The waterfall is the real deal—it flows year-round fed by springs, and the canyon feels lush and enclosed even in dry months. The hike is short and achievable, the shade is reliable, and you're in a riparian zone that feels like a different landscape from the surrounding chaparral. The creek crossings are fun, not dangerous.
From Orange, head toward Lake Elsinore and access Holy Jim Canyon Road (dirt road, steep, narrow—high-clearance vehicle recommended for full access; park lower if needed). The trail is well-marked. Bring water and wear shoes that can handle wet creek rocks. Spring through fall the waterfall is at its best. The hike is out-and-back, so you're not navigating complex junctions.
The drive to the trailhead is rough and not everyone's car will make it (be honest about clearance). The trail gets crowded on weekends, especially Saturdays. Creek crossings mean wet feet—embrace that or bring change of socks.
Go very early on a weekday morning and bring creek shoes; you'll have the waterfall basin alone and avoid the weekend crush entirely.
