Irvine Regional Park and the OC Zoo

Playgrounds, a lake, a railroad and the OC Zoo in one park in Orange. Roughly $11 to $13 for four people, before any extras.

What It Is

Irvine Regional Park sits at 1 Irvine Park Road in the city of Orange, not in Irvine, which costs people a wrong freeway exit most weekends. It is an OC Parks facility with picnic areas, playgrounds, a lake, paved walking and bike paths, the Irvine Park Railroad, pony rides, and the Orange County Zoo inside its boundary.

Why It's Worth Your Time

Nothing else in Orange County occupies a group of four for most of a day at this price. Vehicle entry runs $3 on weekdays and $5 on weekends. OC Zoo admission is $2 per person aged three and over. That totals roughly $11 on a weekday and $13 on a weekend before anything optional. The zoo concentrates on animals and plants native to the southwestern United States, which makes it specific and regional rather than comprehensive.

How To Do It Right

Arrive before 11 a.m. on a weekend. OC Parks closes the park to incoming vehicles once it reaches capacity, typically between noon and 2 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday, and there is no working around it once it happens. Park hours run 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. in fall and winter and 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. in spring and summer. The zoo keeps shorter hours than the park: 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Monday through Friday and 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on weekends, so a late arrival can get you into the park but not the zoo.

The Honest Take

The low entry price is real, but the add-ons are where the day actually costs money. The railroad, pony rides, and bike and aquacycle rentals are all charged separately, and saying yes to everything runs several times the gate price. The zoo is also genuinely small. Come for the open space, shade and variety rather than expecting a major zoo.

Pro Tip

Set navigation to Orange, not Irvine, and go on a weekday if you can. Weekday entry is $2 cheaper per vehicle, the capacity closure does not apply, and the paved loop is quiet enough to actually use.
