Long-fermented artisan pies in the Lantern District — two stories of bricked-out piazza and a rooftop wine experience.
Truly Pizza is the Lantern District pizza spot that takes its dough seriously enough to ferment it for days. The two-story building reads more piazza than restaurant — open-air across both levels, a wine-focused beverage program, and an espresso setup that doesn't feel like an afterthought. Salads are good. Soft serve is the easy yes.
The kitchen runs on long-fermented dough and California-sourced toppings — both round artisan pies and square/Grandma-style pies, not strictly Neapolitan. The Dana Point flagship has been the proof-of-concept for what's now expanding up the coast (Laguna Beach opened spring 2026, with Truly's first full cocktail program). Walking in, the space does most of the work: exposed brick, an oven-centered exhibition kitchen, and a rooftop level that catches the afternoon sun.
Seating is outdoor-only across a garden-level patio and a rooftop mezzanine — heaters and blankets when it cools down. It's approachable for date nights, groups, and all-ages dining, with enough scale across the two levels that none of those moods crowd the others out. Loud at peak times, especially Friday night. The rooftop wine experience is the move when the weather's right.
Original Cheese—the square house cheese pie with California red sauce, fresh and whole milk mozzarella, basil, extra virgin olive oil, and grated Romano. The dough test if it's your first visit.
Our Cheese—the round red-sauce pie with fresh and whole milk mozzarella, basil, extra virgin olive oil, and grated Romano. Worth ordering beside the square Original Cheese if you're with a group.
Sweet & Spicy—whole milk mozzarella, hot soppressata, stracciatella, and Mike's Hot Honey. Their Sunday-pizza standard.
Dana Point Wedge—the namesake salad: iceberg lettuce with house-made herby ranch, Point Reyes blue cheese, candied walnuts, local dates, chives, red onion, smoked bacon, and cracked black pepper. Worth ordering to split.
Picnic Plate—an artisan meat-and-cheese board. The right starter if you're settling in with wine.
Soft Serve—rotating flavors. Save room, or don't pretend you're going to.

The Tuesday closure catches people off guard — verify before driving in. Weekend dinner waits get long; the rooftop is the move, but reservations help on busy nights. Worth knowing it's outdoor-only — plan accordingly if the weather's cold. It's excellent neighborhood pizza with enough polish to justify a reservation, and the sweet spot is still the full experience: rooftop, wine, salad, soft serve, and a table that doesn't feel rushed.
