What It Is

The Newport Beach Christmas Boat Parade is a five-night decorated-vessel procession through Newport Harbor, marking its 118th year in 2026. Nightly parades run December 16 through 20, roughly 6:30 p.m. start, with more than 100 lit-up yachts, sailboats, kayaks, and canoes moving through the harbor along a 14-mile route. The Ring of Lights home-decorating contest lines the waterfront properties along the same route.

Why Go

The parade is one of Orange County's defining holiday traditions and among the longest-running holiday events in the country. Free public viewing is available from harbor-side parks, walkways, and public docks. Waterfront dining reservations along the route stack the parade with a full evening. For visitors coming to OC in December, this is the single most photographed holiday event of the year.

What to Know Before You Go

Dates and start time: Nightly December 16 through 20, 2026, approximately 6:30 p.m. Confirm the current start time on the official Christmas Boat Parade site before you go. Free viewing: Balboa Peninsula, Balboa Island, Lido Isle waterfront, and public parks along the harbor route. Parking: The harbor gets tight. Balboa Peninsula lots fill early, especially the opening and closing nights and the middle Saturday. Dining: Waterfront restaurants along the route sell out months in advance for parade nights. Book early or plan for cocktail seating away from the water. Weather: Dress warmer than you think. Harbor breeze at 6:30 p.m. in December cuts through light coats fast.

The Honest Take

The parade is spectacular and it is genuinely crowded. Opening night on December 16 and the middle Saturday are the two hardest logistical evenings. For a quieter experience, Sunday night or Wednesday delivers the same parade with materially less friction. Public viewing from a Balboa Island bench is a legitimate free option; a private-dock or waterfront-table view is the premium experience but requires early booking. Either way, arrive at least 30 minutes before the first boat.
