Made-from-scratch donuts in a Del Obispo strip mall, ranked #3 on Yelp's 2023 Top 100 Donut Shops list.
JD Flannel Donuts is the donut shop that makes you reconsider what a donut shop is. Owner-operated and tucked into a Del Obispo strip mall, they've built a reputation as one of California's standout craft donut operations on a foundation of from-scratch technique, hand-cut small batches, no artificial flavors, colors, or preservatives, and a seasonal menu that rotates with intent. The unassuming storefront does most of the heavy lifting in the surprise.
The team makes donuts in-house in small batches throughout the day. The menu rotates by season — Blueberry Lemon when it's on the board, Maple Bacon as a recurring signature, plus a rotating cast of fillings and glazes. Gluten-friendly vegan options are part of the regular rotation, not afterthought one-offs. They take pre-orders online, and popular flavors can sell out before close.
It's a counter shop. Small footprint, a few tables, made for grab-and-go and short lingers. Neighborhood-oriented without being pitched at one age group — the donuts are the draw, the room exists to serve them.
Brown Butter Sea Salt—the must-order. Nutty, toasted brown butter glaze finished with flaky salt; ask if any just came out of the fryer, because warm pushes it from great to unreal.
Maple Bacon—the recurring signature. Sweet, salty, real bacon, real maple glaze.
Blueberry Lemon—seasonal when it's on the board. Tart, bright, balanced.
Whatever's New on the Board—the seasonal/specials rotation is where the obsession shows. Ask what just came out.
Location: 31878 Del Obispo St #122, San Juan Capistrano · Hours: Wed–Sun 7am–2pm (Mon–Tue closed) · Pre-orders: Available at jdflannel.com — recommended for popular flavors · Parking: Strip mall lot, easy · Best time: Weekday opening for full selection
Popular flavors can sell out before close — a busy Saturday can mean a thinner board well before 2pm. If you're driving in for a specific flavor, pre-order the night before. The strip mall location does this place no aesthetic favors — it looks like a thousand other donut counters from outside, which is exactly why first-timers underestimate it.
