Hoag spent three years building at the corner of Sand Canyon Avenue and Alton Parkway. It cut the ribbon on September 19, 2026, announced the campus open on September 21, and told the Daily Pilot every service would be running by September 28. The Hoag Hospital Irvine Sun Family Campus adds six new buildings, 155 inpatient beds, 11 operating rooms, two procedure rooms and 120,000 square feet of outpatient space to a hospital Hoag opened in 2010. The Irvine campus now totals 251 beds, per Hoag.
The bigger change is the layout. Instead of stacking everything into one tower, Hoag built separate pavilions for women's health, cancer, digestive health and surgery, joined by gardens, an atrium and sky bridges. The Daily Pilot puts the net new construction at 475,000 square feet. Hoag calls it a healthcare village. The architect, LPA Design Studios, says the plan borrows from Irvine's own master plan of villages connected by parks. For a city planned down to the street trees, it fits.
What Opened
Women's Hospital and Outpatient Pavilion
The Women's Hospital has 24 private labor, delivery, recovery and postpartum suites, 21 antepartum and postpartum rooms, a dedicated OB triage unit, a 24/7 OB emergency department and a 17-bed Level III NICU with private rooms. Three operating rooms handle cesarean sections. The Hoag Hospital Foundation says six of the suites are specialty birthing suites designed for births supported by midwives and doulas, some with built-in tubs.
The reason it's in Irvine comes down to a ZIP code count. Hoag Chief Operating Officer Marcy Brown told the Daily Pilot that planning started when Hoag looked at how many babies born at its Newport Beach hospital came from Irvine ZIP codes. Hoag projects annual births rising from about 9,000 to 12,000 by 2028. Brown told the Orange County Business Journal the Irvine NICU means "we'll be able to keep mothers and babies together, which is huge."
Across the garden, the Women's Outpatient Pavilion covers breast health, maternal-fetal diagnostics, OB-GYN and midwifery care, and imaging. Per the Daily Pilot, its Comprehensive Breast Center pairs 29 exam rooms with seven mammography suites and six ultrasound suites. Brown's pitch to the paper was continuity: a patient can go from an annual mammogram to surgery, reconstruction, radiation and chemotherapy without leaving the campus.
Cancer & Digestive Hospital and Outpatient Pavilions

The Cancer & Digestive Hospital Pavilion holds 70 inpatient rooms. The outpatient pavilion next to it handles the day-to-day of treatment. The Daily Pilot reported 42 private infusion rooms, six GI procedure suites and 31 oncology exam rooms there, along with labs and an oncology pharmacy.
The campus also houses what Hoag calls Orange County's first dedicated Cancer Urgent Care, which treats cancer-related symptoms and treatment side effects. It is open to cancer patients treated outside Hoag, not just Hoag's own. Brown made the case for it to the Daily Pilot: "The last place [patients] want to be when they're feeling lousy, they're feeling weak, maybe dehydrated, is in the emergency room."
Surgical Pavilion
Surgery opened first. The Business Journal reported the Surgical Pavilion opened in May 2026, months ahead of the rest. It has eight operating rooms, one of them a hybrid OR, plus two procedure rooms and a 24-room ICU. More is planned: Brown told the Daily Pilot in September that Hoag would launch cardiac services, including open-heart surgery, and neurosurgery at the campus in the coming months.
The Front Door and the Back of House
The Du Family Hospital Pavilion is the campus's main entrance, named for Ben and Carmela Du, whose $25 million gift Hoag announced in April 2024. It holds the main lobby, a worship center and a reflection garden. Out of sight, a 35,000-square-foot Laboratory & Logistics Pavilion consolidates lab, pharmacy and campus operations.
All of it sits alongside what was already there: a 24/7 emergency department, inpatient medical care and Hoag Orthopedic Institute, the orthopedic specialty hospital on the same campus.
The Money
The campus carries the name of Diana and David Sun, who have given Hoag $100 million in two $50 million gifts, in 2022 and 2025. The Dus' gift anchors the entrance.
The total price is less settled. Hoag's own releases, from the July 2023 groundbreaking through the opening announcement, call it a $1 billion expansion. The Orange County Business Journal, the Los Angeles Times' Daily Pilot and LPA all use $1.2 billion. No Hoag document we found reconciles the two. Call it a billion-dollar-plus project and leave it there.
The Part the Ribbon Cutting Skipped
The City of Irvine approved this project in January 2021 for more than what just opened. That approval raised the campus's allowed bed count from 166 to 391 and its allowed hospital space from about 576,000 to just over 1 million square feet.
Hoag's opening count is 251 beds. Whether the remaining entitlement becomes a later phase or goes unused, Hoag's opening materials don't say. But the signals point toward growth: a births target a third higher than today, and cardiac surgery and neurosurgery on the way. For anyone watching Irvine's Sand Canyon corridor, that unused headroom is the line item worth tracking.
What It Means If You Live in OC
For anyone already in the Hoag system, more specialty care now lives in Irvine instead of only at Hoag's Newport Beach hospital. Labor and delivery with a Level III NICU, a full breast center, a surgical pavilion and a cancer-specific urgent care are all on one campus.
Two practical notes. First, this campus now has three different front doors for urgent problems: the general 24/7 emergency department, the OB emergency department in the Women's Hospital, and the Cancer Urgent Care. They are not interchangeable, so know which one fits the situation before you need it. Second, a new building doesn't change your insurance. Confirm Hoag is in your plan's network before you plan a delivery or a surgery there.
Irvine got a hospital that looks like the rest of Irvine: organized by specialty, connected by green space, built to a plan. The city approved room for more, and Hoag is already filling it in.
